How to hire reliable forklift operators

What to look for, how to screen for equipment experience and safety, and how to keep good forklift operators once you find them.

The short answer

To hire reliable forklift operators, define the exact equipment and environment, verify hands-on experience on that equipment, confirm certification status and complete an onsite evaluation, and screen for attendance and safety habits. Competitive pay for your local market and a structured first week are the biggest factors in keeping them.

Key takeaways

  • Specify equipment type — sit-down, stand-up, reach truck, order picker.
  • OSHA requires employers to evaluate operators on their own site and equipment.
  • Screen for safety habits and attendance, not just years of experience.
  • Check in during the first two weeks, when most early turnover happens.

Be specific about the equipment

"Forklift experience" can mean very different things. An operator with years on a sit-down counterbalance may never have run a reach truck at height. List the equipment, lift heights, load types and whether the role involves trailers, racking or narrow aisles.

Certification and onsite evaluation

Under OSHA rules, employers are responsible for training and evaluating powered industrial truck operators on the equipment and conditions at their site. A prior certificate shows experience, but plan for a site-specific evaluation before anyone operates alone.

Screen for safety and reliability

The best predictors of a good operator are safety habits and attendance.

  • Ask how they perform pre-shift inspections.
  • Ask about near-misses and how they were handled.
  • Confirm transportation and shift availability.
  • Check references from recent warehouse supervisors.

Keep them once you find them

Experienced operators have options. Pay at or above your local market, give clear start-day instructions, assign a trainer for the first week and check in at day 1, day 3 and week 2.
