Temp-to-hire vs. direct hire: which is right for your role?

How to choose between temp-to-hire and direct hire based on the role, your timeline, budget and how certain you are about the fit.

The short answer

Temp-to-hire lets you evaluate a worker on the job for a set period before offering a permanent role, while direct hire puts the candidate on your payroll from day one. Temp-to-hire suits hourly, high-turnover or newly created roles where fit is uncertain. Direct hire suits skilled, professional and leadership roles where strong candidates won't leave a permanent job for a temporary one.

Key takeaways

  • Temp-to-hire reduces the risk of a bad hire for hourly and entry-level roles.
  • Direct hire attracts candidates who are already employed and won't take a temporary job.
  • Agree on the conversion period and terms before the worker starts.
  • Many employers use both: temp-to-hire for the floor, direct hire for leads and managers.

How temp-to-hire works

The worker starts as a temporary employee of the staffing firm, which handles payroll, taxes and insurance. After an agreed period — often several weeks to a few months — you can offer them a permanent position.

This gives you real attendance and performance data before committing, and gives the worker a chance to confirm the job is right for them.

How direct hire works

The staffing firm recruits, screens and presents candidates, and you hire your choice directly onto your payroll. Fees are usually a one-time placement fee rather than an hourly markup.

When to choose each

Use the role, the candidate market and your certainty about the job to decide.

  • Temp-to-hire: warehouse, production, customer service, administrative and newly created roles.
  • Direct hire: skilled trades in short supply, accounting, technology, engineering and management.
  • Executive search: senior leadership roles that require confidential, targeted outreach.

Set expectations up front

Whichever route you choose, agree on the conversion timeline, pay at conversion and any fees in writing before the first day. Clear terms keep good workers from leaving for a permanent offer elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical temp-to-hire period?

It varies by employer and role. Many programs run several weeks to a few months. Agree on the period before the worker starts.

Is direct hire more expensive than temp-to-hire?

They are priced differently. Direct hire usually carries a one-time fee; temp-to-hire is billed hourly during the temporary period. Which costs less depends on the role and how long the temporary period lasts.

Can I switch a temp worker to permanent early?

Usually yes, under the terms in your staffing agreement. Ask your staffing partner how early conversion works.
